Three of the North East’s most sought after musicians join forces to create a compelling, energetic act that carries audiences on an entertaining instrumental journey through Northumberland and beyond. Rooted in the region’s traditions with a serious respect for those who have gone before, these highly accomplished musicians bring fresh ideas, funny stories, and sparkly shoes into the mix to create a captivating performance, appealing to folk aficionados and newcomers alike.

Northumbrian piper Andy May (Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies, Baltic Crossing) is joined by good friends guitarist Ian Stephenson (Kan, Baltic Crossing) and fiddler Sophy Ball (422, Bottle Bank Band). After years of playing tunes together socially and performing together in other groups, they finally decided to form the trio in 2014 and released their first album About Time the following year.

Equally at ease in the intimacy of small venues or huge festival stages, the trio invites the audience into their shared musical home, with tunes from Northumberland discovered in aging manuscripts, innovative new compositions, deft interplay, clever arrangements, unexpected rhythms, tales of the Northumbrian pipes, and a rich, warm sound.

With a solid and sensitive understanding of music, place, tradition, and innovation, combined with a strong sense of fun, the Andy May Trio inspires, educates, and entertains – whether at festivals, leading workshops, or on stage in the local folk club or Arts Centre.

New album will be released in January 2019.

“These musicians are always a delight: extremely talented, committed, dedicated to sharing the traditions of the region, innovative, and good fun too. Audiences love them and so do we.” Folkworks
